The waters of the Great Smoky Mountains are known for their
purity. In the fast moving streams, of which there are more
than 300 to be found, the crystal clear waters provide a fisherman's
paradise. More than 50 species of fish can be found and the
area is known as one of the premier flyfishing regions in
the eastern United States. Rainbow trout can be found in the
pools below falls and in faster waters. Brown trout, which
were introduced to the region in 1900, can be found in the
larger streams in the lower elevations of the Park, and around
the outer edges of pools, tree roots, and rocks.
