During the last days of September, first frosts will have
touched upon the Great Smoky Mountains. By October the Mountains
are in the full throes of their fall extravaganza. From the
middle of the month to the end, more and more of the decidious
trees begin to change their colors. Decidous, from the Latin
verb decidere, which means "to fall off", plants
shed their leaves in the fall to be able to survive the harsh
elements of winter.
